Disneyland Candlelight Processional 2023 ft. Brie Larson

Hello, friends!

Last month, I had the opportunity to attend the Candlelight Processional at Disneyland. This year, it was narrated by the Disney icon and Captain Marvel herself, Brie Larson!

An opportunity as rare as they come, I saw all the lights, heard the songs, experienced the high-production show, and saw the narrator, Brie! Before we get into my experience, let’s talk a bit about what this event is.

What is the Candlelight Processional?

Often shortened to just “Candlelight,” this annual event is a retelling of the Nativity story, or the first Christmas, with choral song and scripture, bright lights and music, and a celebrity narrator. This tradition began with Walt Disney himself and is held at the parks across both coasts. Here in California, it’s held for one weekend, on two nights, and typically has one celebrity narrator whose identity is kept secret until the processional begins. Of course, there’s always rumors and gossip, though…

Who can attend Candlelight?

Seats are set up for VIP guests, Club 33 members, members of the media, and of course, the lucky Cast Members who won a seat through an exclusive sweepstakes (like me!). There is also standby room to see Candlelight all along Main Street, USA; however, note that it is very crowded and Guests likely need to reserve a spot very early in the day.

Now let’s dive into my experience!

Seeing is Brie-lieving

My guest and I were seated for the event, toward the back and a bit smushed as the seats were arranged close together, but grateful to have had this opportunity nonetheless. I had never seen any clips of Candlelight before but I knew generally what was expected.

At once, the lights lowered and the various choir groups slowly walked in from backstage, singing the first song while each held onto a candle. The choir groups ranged from students to religious groups and local ensembles. They soon came into my view, walking toward the stage, and I felt chills.

The slow, tender movement of the choir members… the soft glow from their candles… the hushed quiet among the crowd whose attention was completely captivated by the choir nearly brought a tear to my eye.

I then saw a figure move up the steps toward the podium stationed at the front of the stage. Almost all of the choir members were standing at their designated spots, still singing their hymns. The figure stopped before reaching the podium and sat down, obscured by some floral arrangements.

The figure stood up as soon as the hymn was finished, and an announcer declared, “Ladies and gentlemen, Brie Larson.” At that exact moment, I understood clearly why young fangirls cried at Justin Bieber and One Direction concerts in years past. I was suddenly overcome with excitement, joy, gratitude, and disbelief. Tears welled up and I wanted to scream and jump in utter joy and enthusiasm.

Brie, poised and elegant for the narration, began telling the first story of Christmas.

Shout for Joy

After each time Brie shared a line or two from the story, the choir would erupt in a beautiful chorus of gospel music, complete with trumpets, lights, and grandeur. Each song seemed even more extravagant and brilliant than the last song. I felt incredibly blessed and honored to experience it all in person.

I recognized many of the songs, but some were new to me. Walt Disney Records released an album of all of their processional songs.

Finally, after about 45 minutes of narration and song, the story of the first Christmas was finished, and Brie sent us off with a farewell:

It was overall such an incredible and moving experience. I loved being able to see one of my favorite celebrities as well!

Thank you Disney for this amazing experience!

Until next time, friends!
